Dealing with a Mosquito Infestation

Mosquitoes are tiny yet dangerous pests. These small insects invade our yards and home in search of food and habitats and bring illnesses and painful bites. In the U.S. mosquitoes have been known to transmit diseases such as the West Nile virus, Encephalitis and Zika Virus. Prevention and treatments are important when dealing with a mosquito infestation.

How to Control Mosquito Infestations

Prevent Mosquitos from Breeding

Mosquitoes need water to thrive. The female mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, which then hatch into adult mosquitoes that devastate you and your loved ones. Of course, eliminating any puddles and ponds may seem obvious, but sometimes, you can forget.

  • Drain all pools and ponds in your compound and cover those that you can’t. Remember to drain all the water, because small puddles in the corners can attract mosquitoes. If you can’t drain your pool, keep the water clean and chlorinated, especially during summer. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • If you have any garbage or recycling bins outside your home, drill holes at the bottom. The holes drain any water inside the bins to prevent breeding.
  • Check all the gutters and drain pipes around your home and unclog them regularly. The dirt in the gutters can restrict water flow and create small puddles for mosquitoes to breed.
  • Drain all yard features with stagnant waters including birdbaths and ponds. If you cannot drain them, introduce a motion to the water, or add fish to your pond to feed on mosquito larvae.
  • If it’s raining, remember to check for puddles in your compound when the rain subsides. Drain all the puddles around your home or introduce absorbents such as sand.
  • Look for out for any tins, tires, wheelbarrows, and toys that may hold water in your yard.
  • Check for any tree stumps in your yard with stagnant water.
  • Ensure that there’s no water inside your potted plants after watering them or after rain.
  • If you need to store rainwater in barrels, remember to cover it.
  • If you have farm animals with water barrels, check to ensure that no mosquitoes are breeding. You can supply and drain the water as needed.
