What’s slender, moves like a fish and loves to eat your finest silks? Meet the silverfish! Have you seen them in your home? Silverfish like the dark and come out of hiding when everyone else is asleep; they spend the night nibbling on your carpet or munching on your favorite books. They are especially fond of the adhesive in wallpaper. But, they’re not too picky. They’ll also eat clothing, shampoo and even dandruff!
The warm, humid environment inside our home is the perfect place for silverfish to set up camp with his mates. They prefer dark damp areas and you’ll often find them in bathrooms, basements, kitchens, attics or garages where boxes are stored. They love starch, so boxes are another bit of food for them. Silverfish can vary in color from white to grayish brown to silver. They are typically teardrop shaped and range in size from about a ½” up to almost 1”.
If you see even one silverfish in your home, it’s time to give us a call. Female silverfish can lay up to 20 eggs per day, leading to quite an infestation if not controlled.
