From electrical damage to the loss of structural integrity, squirrels can cause a lot of harm to your home. Detecting their presence early is crucial to minimizing damage but getting rid of squirrels can be a tall task for the typical homeowner.

How Do You Know if You Have Squirrels in the Attic?

Attic squirrels can go unnoticed for a while, but once you discover their presence, you will think of little else.  Look for these signs that indicate that you have squirrels in your attic:

  • Chewed-up wires, holes in the vents, or evidence of a nest can all indicate that a squirrel is running amok. Yard damage is also common with squirrels.  Destroyed bird feeders, chewed-up fences and tree bark, and consumed plants all point to squirrel activity.
  • Scratching, rustling, or chewing sounds at the ceiling or in the walls are another sign of squirrel infestation.
  • The strong smell of squirrel feces and urine plus the musty odor of their nests will permeate your home. A dead squirrel in the wall will emit the nasty smell of decomposition.
  • Squirrel scat is pellet shaped and about 3/8” long. Squirrel droppings look very similar to rat droppings but are slightly larger and more rounded on the ends.
  • Seeing more squirrels or more of their nests (in cavities of trees and in tree branches) may mean you have a squirrel problem elsewhere as well. Watch these critters and see if they enter your home.
  • A high squirrel population on your property will result in more fighting between the critters. Since there are so many, they will fight for territory and resources.

The Dangers of Squirrels in the Attic

A squirrel infestation can pose serious risks to your home, your property, and your health. If you notice signs of squirrels in your residence, you should take action to remove them as soon as possible.

An unchecked squirrel infestation can lead to problems such as:

  • Damaged electrical wires and increased risk of fire
  • Siding damage
  • Wood damage and loss of structural integrity
  • Increased vulnerability to water damage
  • Damage to insulation
  • Increased energy bills
  • Unpleasant noises, odors and/or squirrel carcasses in walls
  • Disease and additional pest infestation

Can You Get Rid of Squirrels Yourself?

It is dangerous to remove squirrels without professional help. These rodents can carry diseases and move extremely quickly, making them difficult to catch. They could attack you with their claws and teeth, leading to potential diseases and injuries. Their carcasses require proper disposal to avoid health hazards to you and your family.
