Do Roaches Mean My House is Dirty?

Written by SafeHaven Pest Control LLC | February 20, 2018

No one wants to see cockroaches. Ever. Many people assume that their presence is an indication of unsanitary conditions however, this is not always the case. It’s true that bits of food, grease, and other substances left on surfaces can attract roaches looking for food. But these unsightly pests also invade spotless environments when looking for food, water, and shelter. Let’s explore the reasons cockroaches can and do find their way into perfectly clean spaces.

The Adaptable Cockroach

Roaches can adapt to nearly any environment, which means they can live in near immaculate conditions. Cockroaches can survive on soap, water droplets, paint, the scantest trace of crumbs, and other substances typically found in clean houses.

Landscaping

The landscaping near your home may be providing a hospitable environment for cockroaches and other pests. Certain plants and pine bark/straw mulches attract roaches, and if they are near the perimeter of your home, this can eventually allow them entry. Consider using cedar much, which repels insects, or another type of mulch that does not attract roaches.

Firewood

Stacks of firewood often harbor insects, and roaches hiding in the woodpile may enter a home through cracks in the foundation, walls, windowsills, and so forth. Firewood should be stored away from the home, and any wood you bring inside should be used immediately.

Moisture Attracts Roaches

Humid environments are the ideal spot for many pests, including cockroaches. Be sure to repair leaks promptly and consider using a dehumidifier.
